BALTIMORE, MD – Following a judge’s order to hold Maryland Department of Health officials in contempt of court for their failure to provide beds to patients at state psychiatric hospitals, AFSCME Maryland is mobilizing to draw attention to the staff shortage at the Potomac Center in Hagerstown. The center is one of several facilities ordered by the court to add more beds by the end of the year.
“Patient care and safety in these facilities should be a top priority for the state. That’s why it’s essential to increase the number of staff members to meet the demands of caring for more patients,” Jazzmen Knoderer, a spokeswoman for AFSCME Maryland, said.
AFSCME Maryland members plan to hold a protest and informational picket to inform the community about the ongoing staffing crisis and how access to care for mental health patients is being limited by the state’s inaction.
