BALTIMORE – AFSCME Maryland President Patrick Moran today released the following statement in response to the Department of Legislative Services’ spending affordability briefing:
“When public service employees called on Governor Hogan to fill job vacancies in hospitals, jails and departments across the state, his administration dismissed them as ‘political operatives.’
“With the state now admitting that nearly 1,300 additional positions need to be created in addition to filling at least 1,200 job vacancies – including positions in mental health, corrections and juvenile services – it’s time for this administration to stop making excuses, deflecting and name calling. Without delay, the state must fill these positions and fairly compensate workers to retain experienced employees.
“Public service employees put it all on the table every day to make sure our state is safe, but this administration has turned its back on the hardworking women and men who are the backbone of our communities. Every day that Governor Hogan refuses to fill these job vacancies, Marylanders are at risk.”
