Baltimore, MD – AFSCME Maryland President Patrick Moran today issued the following statement in response to plans by lawmakers to investigate the spike in assaults on state employees at Spring Grove, the state’s largest psychiatric hospital:

“The violence at Spring Grove is just the tip of the iceberg. Across Maryland, state employees are facing the brunt of the staffing crisis and Governor Hogan’s mismanagement of critical agencies that provide public services to our communities.

“Despite Governor Hogan’s promise to use his business acumen to change Maryland for the better, he has failed in his duty to allocate the resources needed to functionally operate mental health hospitals, improve conditions in correctional facilities, provide modern transportation services and ensure public safety for all Marylanders.

“Instead of reaching out to communities and listening to concerns of the hardworking women and men experiencing this crisis in public health and worker safety first-hand, Hogan has resorted to name calling – referring to state workers as political operatives whenever their concerns are made public.

“Governor Hogan has repeatedly failed to meet the needs of Marylanders. The time for excuses and deflection from this administration is over. It is our hope that the investigations improve working conditions and safety in state-run hospitals so that patients can receive the care they need.”
