AFSCME Unanimously Endorses Brooke Lierman for Comptroller of Maryland
BALTIMORE- Today, AFSCME Council 3 and AFSCME Council 67 are proud to jointly announce their endorsement of Delegate Brooke Lierman for Comptroller of Maryland. Together, the two councils represent over 50,000 state, county, municipal, school board and higher education employees across Maryland. The vote to endorse Lierman was unanimous, a testament to her fierce advocacy for organized labor, her unparalleled ability to deliver results for working families, and her vision to create an economy that works for all Marylanders.
“The Comptroller plays a critical role as Maryland’s chief financial officer and one of the members of the Board of Public Works, and there’s no one we trust more in that role than Brooke Lierman” said AFSCME Council 3 President Patrick Moran. “Recovering from the pandemic will require investing in our public services, and Brooke has an exciting vision for how the Comptroller can support Maryland families.
AFSCME Council 67 Executive Director Glen Middleton continued, “Delegate Lierman is the best candidate with a proven history of getting the work done to be the next Comptroller. We look forward to working together to ensure our pensions are fully funded and family-supporting union jobs are protected. We are proud to endorse Brooke today and get to work fighting for a better Maryland..”
AFSCME members unanimously voted to endorse Brooke Lierman after speaking with all major candidates, Republican and Democrat. Over the past 5 years, Delegate Lierman’s leadership has led to landmark legislation to invest in and improve public services. Lierman shares AFSCME’s vision of robust public services with the staff and resources needed to provide a functioning safety net for all Marylanders.
“Change starts by putting in the work, and AFSCME has been a true partner in ensuring we deliver high-quality public services and good-paying jobs to Marylanders. I am honored to have their support,” said Brooke Lierman. “As the state’s chief financial officer, I will work to ensure we are investing our surplus in vital public services that will level the playing field and create opportunity for marginalized communities across Maryland. I’m excited to continue working with AFSCME Council 3 and AFSCME Council 67 to strengthen Maryland’s public services and I am very proud to receive their endorsement today.”
The Comptroller plays a key role in managing AFSCME members at their agency, managing, and projecting the state’s revenues, protecting public employees’ pensions, and overseeing State contracts and spending on the Board of Public Works.
AFSCME Council 3 member and Comptroller staffer Tia McCoy-Johnson added, “The pandemic has brought unprecedented financial challenges for our neighbors, and the workload at our agency is only increasing. Delegate Lierman has the history of effective leadership that we need to help our state recover.”
