Outbreak at Largo MVA Prompts AFSCME Local 3655 Members to Speak Out

Last week, there was a COVID outbreak at the MVA branch office in Largo, Maryland. Up to five, AFSCME Council 3 members have been infected and one employee has died after contracting the virus at the workplace.  AFSCME has demanded to bargain about this emergency and the Hogan administration has refused. These members are in daily contact with the general public because of the vital services we provide. 

Regional AFSCME Meetings

Adapting and Thriving Remotely

On Wednesday, October 14th, AFSCME Council 3 will host a virtual townhall ahead of the release of the results of our 2020 AFSCME Telework Survey. Beginning in September, a workgroup of AFSCME Council 3 members organized a survey of all public employees which gathered over 1,000 responses.

October 6th Bargaining Update: University of Maryland Eastern Shore

Over the past month, members of AFSCME Local 1833 have been bargaining with management for a fair agreement minimizing the impact of budget shortfalls on frontline workers. The Bargaining Team at UMES is made up of Quiana Tilghman, Louise Gaile, Betty Hoskins and Relford Matthews and Deborah Robinson. Together, we have pushed for management to set a final agreement.  

New Revenue Estimates for Next Fiscal Year Are Up: Hogan’s Heavy Cuts Would Have Been Unnecessary

On July 1, Governor Hogan threatened to implement an across the board 5% pay cut, significant cuts to filled and vacant positions and an increase in the cost of health insurance. AFSCME refused to agree to these drastic and unnecessary cuts, organized to convince the Board of Public Works to vote down these cuts and has continued to vigilantly defend the rights of frontline employees in the workplace, in the budget and in Annapolis.

This fall, public schools across Maryland have resumed online and slowly we are beginning to see the state resume normal functioning. With talks looming of re-opening schools as early as the second quarter, it’s clear Maryland is on track to continue opening sooner rather than later. We are seeing more people gain confidence being out and about, more restaurants with people inside, and grocery stores are bustling with more people every day.

AFSCME Maryland is leading the fight for improved health and safety in public agencies and institutions of higher education. Recently, our field director, Denise Gilmore hosted a Question and Answer session with Attorney Heather Heilman on the COVID-19 protections available for immunocompromised workers.
