Champion for working people receives overwhelming support from largest union of public service workers in Maryland

Upper Marlboro — On Thursday, February 6, AFSCME Maryland Council 3 announced the union’s endorsement of Aisha Braveboy in the Prince George’s County Executive special election.

“We are proud to endorse Aisha Braveboy as Prince George’s next County Executive. She has an extensive career in public service and is the most prepared and qualified candidate for the job. In a time of uncertainty for Maryland, she understands the issues facing our communities and will be a champion for working families in Prince George’s County. And with Maryland facing a multi-billion dollar state deficit, we believe she will help raise revenues to sustain our public services in a responsible and progressive way,” said AFSCME Maryland Council 3 President Patrick Moran.

“We are excited to support Aisha Braveboy’s candidacy to be our next County Executive. We have faith that, just like U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks, Braveboy will be open to working with union members to ensure that those who provide valuable county services will be appreciated and respected,” said Dr. Rhonda Porter, President of AFSCME Local 1170, which represents county supervisors in Prince George’s County.

AFSCME Maryland Council 3 represents thousands of workers who live in Prince George’s County. AFSCME also represents thousands of workers who work for Prince George’s County, the University of Maryland College Park, Bowie State University, Prince George’s Community College, the City of College Park, the City of Bowie, and more.

AFSCME convened a committee of member leaders who work in Prince George’s County to decide on this endorsement. The final endorsements were based off a candidate’s commitment to supporting working people, their record of supporting AFSCME members and union organizing, and the viability of their candidacy. With a long history in Prince George’s County, AFSCME took into account candidates’ current and past records and will work at all levels to help elect our endorsed candidate.
