AFSCME Maryland Announces Endorsements for 2024 Elections

State’s largest union for city, county, and state employees endorses Angela Alsobrooks for U.S. Senate

Baltimore — AFSCME Maryland has announced endorsements for the 2024 elections for the following:

U.S. Senate:
Angela Alsobrooks

U.S. House of Representatives:
District 2: John Olszewski Jr.
District 3: Sarah Elfreth
District 4: Glenn Ivey (incumbent)
District 5: Steny Hoyer (incumbent)
District 6: April McClain Delaney
District 7: Kweisi Mfume (incumbent)
District 8: Jamie Raskin (incumbent)

These endorsements follow a vote by the AFSCME Maryland Council 3 executive board last month.

“With the balance of power in the U.S. Senate on the line, it's more important than ever to have leaders in Washington, DC who will fight for Maryland’s working people. That is why our union, which represents nearly 45,000 public service workers, has endorsed Angela Alsobrooks to be Maryland’s next senator. As a lifelong Marylander, she has had a long and dedicated career in public service, and we are confident she will stand up for what our communities need,” said Patrick Moran, AFSCME Maryland Council 3 President.

The AFSCME Maryland Executive Board convened together after seeking input from local union leaders. The final endorsements were based off of a candidate’s commitment to supporting working people, their record of supporting AFSCME members and union organizing, and the viability of their candidacy.

“Ever since she’s been our county executive, Angela Alsobrooks has been open to hearing our perspectives as union members. She has always welcomed our thoughts on how we can improve county services and has kept open communications between AFSCME members and her leadership team. She understands the value of strong public services and ensures that the workers who provide them are appreciated and respected. In fact, in our most recent union contract, many of us who work for the county will be receiving at least 12.5% in raises over the next two years. I strongly believe Angela Alsobrooks is the right choice for working families in November,” said Dr. Rhonda Porter, President of AFSCME Local 1170, which represents county supervisors in Prince George’s County.
