Chicago — At AFSCME’s 47th International Convention in Chicago, AFSCME Maryland Council 3 President Patrick Moran was elected as AFSCME International President. As only the fifth president in the union’s history, Moran will succeed Lee Saunders and lead AFSCME's national union, which represents over 1.4 million public service workers across the county.

Below is a statement from AFSCME Maryland Council 3:

“The entire AFSCME Maryland family congratulates President Moran on his election as our national union’s next president. For the last 14 years, President Moran has led our council with integrity and care, and he is an organizer through and through.

Under his leadership, we’ve seen our union grow by thousands of new members and the expansion of collective bargaining rights to over 15,000 workers throughout Maryland. During his tenure, Maryland workers won historic raises, new laws to protect against extreme heat and workplace violence, and a record-breaking wage theft settlement of $23 million.

Our AFSCME family in Maryland will miss his daily presence, but we are excited to see the decades of union experience and organizing spirit that President Moran will bring to our national union. We are confident that as AFSCME’s next leader, President Moran will continue to grow worker power, protect and expand public services, and improve the lives of working people everywhere.”
