Baltimore, Maryland- Today, members of AFSCME Council 3 and community allies caravan-ed to worksites continuing to serve the public despite the pandemic. AFSCME Council 3 members are calling on the Board of Public Works to Fund the Frontlines and provide proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), testing plans for what happens when Maryland re-opens, Hero Pay, and adequate staff to do our jobs! Approximately 50 cars traveled together to five worksites staffed by Maryland’s public employees throughout the City of Baltimore.

BALTIMORE, MD- Today we are announcing the bringing together of a group of diverse community, faith and advocacy groups, including but not limited to the ACLU, Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church, Jews United for Justice, BRIDGE Maryland, Public Justice Center, and Maryland Sierra Club, who are calling on the Hogan Administration to do more to protect the public. They call for the following steps to be taken as soon as possible.

AFSCME Members in Western Maryland Fear Coronavirus Spread in State Facilities & Communities

“Over the weekend, the number of cases in Maryland’s correctional facilities almost doubled. Juvenile Services workers weren’t even allowed to wear protective masks until this week. And Potomac Center Staff in Hagerstown are being given two masks to last for a week,” said AFSCME Maryland President Patrick Moran. “These facilities house men, women and children from across the state, and the lack of urgency from state agencies is placing our members and their neighbors in Western Maryland at risk.”

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Today, AFSCME, Maryland’s largest and fastest-growing union for public service employees, joined with Advocates for Children and Youth, ACLU of Maryland and NAACP Maryland to call on Governor Larry Hogan to address the State staffing crisis that is damaging efforts to reduce crime in Baltimore City and reducing services to the citizens of Maryland in agencies across State government, including Health, Juvenile Services and Public Safety & Correctional Services.
