AFSCME Maryland Elects New President to Lead Statewide Union

AFSCME member and former local union leader Jack Hughes succeeds Patrick Moran as next AFSCME Maryland president 

Baltimore — On Thursday, August 20, the AFSCME Maryland Executive Board unanimously elected AFSCME member and former AFSCME Local 3478 President Jack Hughes as the next AFSCME Maryland president. President Hughes succeeds Patrick Moran, who served 14 years as the AFSCME Maryland president before he was elected last Thursday to lead AFSCME’s national union during AFSCME’s 47th International Convention. 

“For the last two decades, Jack has been an integral part of our union’s organizing on the Eastern Shore — including our union’s most recent victory to protect the collective bargaining rights of City of Salisbury workers. He worked at the Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) and served as the president of AFSCME Local 3478 (representing workers at ECI) before officially joining our team as a staff representative and organizer based in our union’s Salisbury office. Jack has been a unifying force for our union on the Eastern Shore, and AFSCME Maryland is in good hands with Jack as our next leader,” said AFSCME International President Patrick Moran. 

President Hughes was sworn in on the evening of Thursday, August 20.
